fracture and failure on the basis of fracture mechanics.
UNIT I ELEMENTS OF SOLID MECHANICS 5
The geometry of stress and strain, elastic deformation, plastic and elasto-plastic
deformation - limit analysis.

UNIT II STATIONARY CRACK UNDER STATIC LOADING 10
Two dimensional elastic fields – Analytical solutions yielding near a crack front – Irwin’s
approximation - plastic zone size – Dugdaale model – J integral and its relation to crack
opening displacement.
UNIT III ENERGY BALANCE AND CRACK GROWTH 8
Griffith analysis – Linear Fracture Mechanics-Crack Opening displacement – Dynamic
energy balance – crack arrest.
UNIT IV FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH CURVE 10
Empirical Relation describing crack growth by fatigue – Life calculations for a given load
amplitude – effects of changing the load spectrum – Effects of Environment.
UNIT V ELEMENTS OF APPLIED FRACTURE MECHANICS 12
Examples of crack-growth Analysis for cyclic loading - leak before break – crack
